High school choral groups are positively ‘Glee’-ful (April 16, 2010)
As the television show “Glee” rises in popularity, its influence is beginning to be felt among local high school vocal ensembles. The chorus at Northwest High School in Greensboro dedicated its entire spring concert to songs from “Glee,” and Grimsley High School’s Madrigal Singers took a break from their more traditional music to perform the show’s signature song, “Don’t Stop Believin.’”
Charlie Headington: Living outside the box (March 21, 2010)
Charlie Headington is a Greensboro man who lives for edible gardening. He and his wife grow most of their own food and he offers permaculture workshops, establishes school gardens, founded Slow Food Piedmont, teaches about spirituality and the earth at UNC-Greensboro and travels the world volunteering at organic farms. He was named the director of the Greensboro Children Museum’s Edible Schoolyard, an organic garden and kitchen that will teach children about food cultivation and preparation.
Nonprofit helps families, friends of car crash victims (Feb. 23, 2010)
The Crash Prevention Network is a Greensboro-based nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness about avoidable causes of car crashes. While they do address drunk driving, they also focus on speeding, texting, talking on cell phones and not wearing a seat belt. A crash in Browns Summit that killed three people made the network’s mission particularly timely.
‘Love fruit’ earns radio host $2,000 (Feb. 19, 2010)
A profile of Josh Anderson, a Greensboro radio host with a knack for writing jingles. The piece focuses on a video he entered in a contest from the avocado distributor Avocados from Mexico that won him the grand prize of $2,000. Anderson previously won $11,000 for an Alka-Seltzer jingle he wrote and performed the song in a commercial that aired during the 2007 Super Bowl.
Group builds enclosures to keep dogs off chains (Feb. 9, 2010)
A piece about the Coalition to Unchain Dogs, a Durham-based organization that raises awareness about the negative effects of chaining on dogs and builds free fences for owners of chained dogs. The new Triad chapter built its first fence in High Point at the end of January, despite more than 6 inches of snow.
High Point ‘Survivor’ writes book about his faith journey (Jan. 26, 2010)
A story about High Point resident Austin Carty, known as “the Christian guy” on “Survivor: Panama.” Carty wrote a book called “High Points and Lows” about his personal faith journey. In the article he details his life post-”Survivor,” his passion for writing and his evolving faith.
Reba’s drummer comes home (Jan. 23, 2010)
A profile of Greensboro native Tommy Harden, who is now Reba McEntire’s drummer. McEntire and her band played a concert at the Greensboro Coliseum, and Harden shared his thoughts on performing for a hometown crowd, his crazy home life and the musical dues he paid before hitting it big with McEntire.
